A beautiful beach bod wasn’t created overnight…or was it? While the constants for having a good figure will always be diet and exercise, let’s face it, sometimes cosmetic surgery is the best solution. We pride ourselves on being a full service plastic surgery facility, with surgical and non-surgical options for helping you look and feel your best. Dr. Hartog strongly believes in offering his patients various procedures provided they will ultimately help his patients achieve their physical goals. My joke (albeit a bad one) is that “Dr. Hartog stays aBREAST of the latest technology.” So let’s chat about some ways to get your dream bathing suit bod.
1. Breast Enhancement: There is no question this is still our most popular procedure. The wonderful news is that there are more options today for enhancing the breasts than ever before. Of course, the most known procedure are breast implants. Augmentation takes under an hour to perform and only requires five to seven days for recovery roughly. The second option, that we are doing more and more each week, is fat grafting to create fuller breasts. The beauty of fat grafting is that Dr. Hartog can literally put fat exactly where you want it!
2. Liposuction: We all have that stubborn area that even with proper diet and exercise won’t budge. That’s where liposuction comes in. Lipo is not a weight loss procedure; it’s more about contouring an area(s). The ideal candidate for liposuction is really someone fairly close to their ideal weight. There are various types of liposuction and we offer all of them here at The Bougainvillea Clinique. There is even a technique that can create the perfect six-pack abs!
3. Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck): For some people fat is not the only issue, it’s stretched excess skin. While a tummy tuck comes with a scar, it truly has one of the highest satisfaction rates of any surgery. Patients are thrilled to get a flat taut stomach again. There are three components to abdominoplasty surgery: removal of excess skin, tightening of abdominal muscles and modest amount of liposuction.
4. Brazilian Butt Lift: This procedure is the most searched surgery currently! Women are wanting to create a fuller rounder bottom. While there are buttock implants they come with myriad of problems. Now, using the new techniques, like that are used for breast enhancement, fat grafting can be done in the buttocks. Again, the luxury of fat grafting is that it can be placed exactly where the patient wants! And the icing on the cake, is that lipo comes with the procedure. It’s the ultimate TWOFER!
Cosmetic surgery is not to be taken lightly and must always be treated with respect. It’s imperative to do your homework and go to a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. There is no question though that plastic surgery can really help you look and feel your best!

Bikini season is here and I would like to share some tips and chat about a few ways to get yourself ready for the season!
1. Laser Hair Removal. Why be bothered with pesky razor bumps and shaving at all for that matter? Laser hair removal will zap those unwanted hairs right off your body in no time at all. We recommend six to nine treatments, spaced about a month apart. NO, it’s not painful and YES it will change your life.
2. Endermologie. While we love cheese, it’s safe to say we like it on a plate and not on our thighs. LPG (short for Endermologie) will smooth and tone those bumpy spots. It truly works but it’s important to think of it as a workout for the skin. The more you do it, the more results you get! We recommend two treatments a week for seven weeks.
3. Sunscreen. Yes, we know this has been pushed down all of our throats but we see sun damaged skin everyday. We know the harm, some irreversible, that partying in the sun sans protection will do. We offer three different lines of sunscreen for every type of beach lover: the active beach goer, the sensitive beach luvah and the bronze goddess. Our faves are Sun Bum, Obagi and SkinCeuticals. We want you to look your best after the sun sets all the way through winter months.
4. Exercise. Listen, I tell every single person, the reason it’s called “working out” is because it’s WORK! I know it’s not always fun but it’s still the best way to get in shape. 5. Diet. The dreaded four letter word! Diet doesn’t equal deprivation. Diet means simply incorporating the right foods. Great foods for getting lean and even tightening the skin are: lean proteins, whole grains, fruit and nuts.

As part of our commitment to provide the highest levels of care to our patients, we’re proud to announce that we now offer Sound Surgical Touchview ultrasound device. This ultrasound imaging system allows us to see the tissues and structures under the skin, including fat, muscle, tendons, arteries, viens. Additionally we can visualize many abnormal structures including ruptured breast implants, cysts and other abnormal masses. Because the device is small and portable, based on a regular MAC laptop computer, it can be used in and out of the operating room before, during and after fat grafting or other procedures. This device is so sensitive that it is able to detect structures less than 1mm in size.
This device adds value to the services we provide, these areas include:
Before procedures to evaluate existing breast implants for rupture, and the fat and muscle tissues prior to grafting, and of course to help detect any other known or unexpected abnormalities like cysts or even tumors. We would like to emphasize that we are not radiologists, so standard MRI and mammography and ultrasound exams performed by radiologists will still be part of our normal protocol. Our goal in having this tool in office will save additional examinations and find issues which can then be further evaluated by a radiologist.
During procedures, the device is easily used with a sterile sheath over the probe which was specialy designed for use by plastic surgeons. This will guide our surgical procedures for more precise liposuction and much more precise placement of fat grafts. The device can also enhance safety by allowing us to visualize important structures such as blood vessels and nerves. This will minimize the risk of damage to these structures.
Ultrasound is also a very valuable tool for postoperative care. After liposuction, ultrasound can be used to locate any fluid collections that can be improved with our lymphatic drainage techniques, to speed recovery and help provide a smoother result.
One of the main reasons for acquiring this device is to monitor the progress and success of fat grafting procedures for breast reconstruction and augmentation. We have already used the device to evaluate existing patients, and have been very pleased to see normal appearing fat tissue for both fresh fat grafts and using the Liquid Gold Lipobank cryopreserved banked fat. We have initiated research protocols to study the progress of our fat grafting patients to ensure optimum results.
There are numerous ideas for future use of imaging equipment to enhance our patient services and results. As regenerative aesthetics and reconstruction using fat grafting and hopefully fat derived stem and regenerative cells becomes standard in plastic surgery, precise imaging will become more valuable.

There are so many types of liposuction these days and even more marketing. The marketing can be very confusing and even misleading at times. We offer various liposuction procedures but it’s not one size fits all. Just because it exists doesn’t mean it’s the right option for your body type. All the various types listed below will have incisions, require 5-7 days for recovery and a post-operative compression garment will need to be worn. Some types of liposuction can be done under local anesthesia. However, depending on the amount of surgical time needed and if multiple areas are to be treated, some type of anesthesia is highly recommended. Since Dr. Hartog has a fully accredited ACHA surgery center, he can provide all types of anesthesia.
1. Tickle Liposuction: The low frequency vibration removes body fat while respecting the surrounding tissues; resulting in smooth contour and a rapid recovery. Another benefit of Tickle Lipo is that it can be performed under straight local, which is appealing for some patients who do not want to be put to sleep.
2. Smart Liposuction: “SmartLipo uses laser technology to melt and liquefy the fat within the fat cells. In addition, it smoothes and tightens the skin to decrease the looseness that one sometimes sees with traditional liposuction. It can be utilized alone to treat smaller areas of fat, such as below the chin, or in combination with liposuction to remove larger areas of fat such as in the abdomen, flanks and thighs.” from Smart Lipo website ** Please know Smart Lipo still requires use of regular liposuction cannula. People tend to think it’s non-surgical/non-invasive.
3. VASER Liposuction: “VASER Lipo uses a minimally invasive technique calledLipoSelection® to selectively break apart and gently remove unwanted fat. The high frequency vibration of VASER® ultrasonic probes causes the fat cells to shake apart and combine into the tumescent fluid.” from VASER website **Again, this is still liposuction. Fat cannot be removed without using a cannula.
4. Aqua Liposuction: “AQUALIPO ® is liposuction that uses technology with a gentle, water-based fat removal system. First, your AQUALIPO ® surgeon uses a powerful water jet fat removal system gently flushes the fat from the body.” from Aqua lipo website This technique can be done under local too.
5. Traditional Liposuction: As with all the techniques listed above, traditional liposuction consists of simply inserting a cannula into the tissues to remove stubborn unwanted fat.
Some options provide better skin tightening, some are less traumatic to the tissues but in the end it’s best to focus on your own body. Each patient is unique and has different concerns.

I have just returned from a wonderful trip to Rome and Florence. In Rome I attended and presented at the 1st International Society of Plastic Regenerative Surgery ISPRES, where I presented our protocols and experience with fat grafting using cryopreserved fat from our Liquid Gold Lipobank. The meeting was one of the most outstanding conferences I have ever attended, and it was an honor to be a speaker in the company of many of the pioneers of fat grafting and adipose derived stem cell technologies (ADRC’s), from the US, Italy, France, Japan, Germany and Spain. In all 45 countries were represented. I heard outstanding presentations from the pioneers in fat grafting for breast reconstruction, including Dr. Rigotti from Italy, and Drs DeLay and Petit from France, as well as Dr Coleman and Dr. Khouri from the US.
As important as it is to read the groundbreaking articles that these individuals have published, it is even more valuable to hear them present their experiences in person, with thousands of these cases, particularly Dr. Rigotti and Dr. DeLay who have been performing fat grafting for breast reconstruction for over 15 years. I also took the opportunity to meet them personally, ask questions, and discuss their techniques with them directly. I am always astounded at the arrogance, bordering on ignorance of many US plastic surgeons, who brush off this procedure as ‘experimental’ and disregard the wealth of experience our European colleagues have
There is way too much exciting information for one post, so I plan to be busy posting over the next week or two on many of the presentations, and letting our patients know how we incorporate these advanced techniques and technologies into our practice.

For years, there have been two companies running the breast implant show here in the U.S.; Allergan and Mentor. This past Friday, the Food and Drug Administration approved Sientra’s silicone implants for use in the states. What does this mean? What will they cost? We don’t know exactly. We do know that Sientra will offer different shapes and sizes. Who knows whether or not we’ll carry them but we like to keep our patients “abreast” 
of what’s happening in the cosmetic surgery world!
